Shetani are magical beings the Makonde believe in, that wreak havoc on people due to their mischievous nature. Folk stories tell us that the Mbilika is a variety of Shetani that feeds exclusively on snakes. The abstract Makonde carving appears as though it has a snake emerging out of one side of the creature's head. Truly scary, and deeply embedded in the ways and beliefs of the Makonde, the Mbilika Shetani would be an excellent piece to place in a showcase at home.
