One of the reasons why the Makonde master artists have grown in repute over the years is because of their versatility. These artists show supreme skill in creating more traditional pieces of art, as well as dabbling in the more abstract. This particular statue of a Makonde head is made using natural African Blackwood, from the Mpingo tree. Notice the intricate manner in which the hair has been carved. This abstract form is the artist's vision of the spirit world.
